From The Archive: Topsail Whiz

Posted on November 25, 2020 by Lillian Kent

Topsail Whiz was the first reining sire to crack the $12 million benchmark, and is Equi-Stat’s all-time leading reining sire. Owned by Bob Loomis for all but the first few days of his life, “Whiz” lived on Loomis’s place in Overbrook, Oklahoma, for the entirety of his 24 years.

Shown only by Loomis, the son of Topsail Cody and out of Jeanie Whiz Bar (by Cee Red) competed for three years in National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) events, finishing third in the 1990 NRHA Futurity Open and earning $38,075. He eventually racked up more than $57,000 in lifetime earnings, according to Equi-Stat. In an interview with the NRHA, Loomis recalled Whiz being an easy and amiable horse to train.

But, as successful he was in competition, the 1987 stallion bred by Tom and Susan McBeath, of Union, Mississippi, etched his name in the history books through the success of his progeny.

His first foal crop hit the ground in 1993, and more than 20 foal crops later, Whiz boasts of 928 money-earning foals with average winnings of $13,910, according to Equi-Stat.

Elite Sire

According to the NRHA, Whiz sired seven NRHA Futurity Open Champions and four NRHA Open Derby champions. His top earners include 2003 NRHA Futurity Open Champion The Great Whiz, a gelding out of Shirleys Folly (by Great Pine) who earned $273,969 throughout his career, and NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Co-Reserve Champion Dun It For Whizkey, a 2013 stallion out of Dun It For Chex (by Hollywood Dun It) who earned $259,120 in the reining pen and is now standing at stud.

His top offspring also include:

NRHA Derby Open Champion Walla Walla Whiz, a stallion out of Shiney Walla Wanda (by Shining Spark) who is an Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Sire.

Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sires Conquistador Whiz (out of Sugarita Chex x Bueno Chex) and Whiz N Tag Chex (out of Tag Chex x King Fritz)

Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire Whizkey N Diamonds (out of Princess In Diamonds x Shining Spark), Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sires

The success of Topsail Whiz as a sire of sires was demonstrated earlier this year when Walla Walla Whiz, who had already sired 2015 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion Shesouttayourleague, found even more success this summer in full siblings Americasnexttopgun and Americas Supermodel (both out of Americasnextgunmodel, by Colonels Smoking Gun[Gunner]).

Americasnexttopgun won the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Level 4 Derby Open Championship while his sister won the Level 4 Open Co-Reserve Championship. Americas Supermodel took her turn in the spotlight at the 2020 High Roller Reining Classic, where she won the Level 4 Derby Open Co-Championship.

To wrap up the year, Americasnexttopgun and trainer Casey Deary won the 2020 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Junior Reining World Championship.

Continued Success

Topsail Whiz’s influence in the reining arena didn’t stop with his sons and daughters, as his grandsons and granddaughters have carried on the family line. His daughters have foaled the earners of more than $8.7 million.

His top-earning maternal grandsons and granddaughters include NRHA Triple Crown Champion Spooks Gotta Whiz ($363,435, by Spooks Gotta Gun), CFR Centenario Wimpy ($181,614, by Wimpys Little Step), Spooks N Jewels ($179,777, by Smart Spook) and Show Me The Buckles ($162,400, by Wimpys Little Step).

Of those, Spooks Gotta Whiz, CFR Centenario Wimpy and Show Me The Buckles are standing at stud, with Spooks Gotta Whiz already siring the winners of more than $2.9 million.

The success of Whiz’s bloodline throughout his life and beyond has only confirmed his last mark on the reining industry.

1990 NRHA Open Futurity – Tercer lugar

1991 NRHA Nivel (L)4 Open Lazy E Classic Campeón

1991 NRHA L4 Open Derby – Cuarto lugar

The Great Whiz (out of Pines BH): NRHA LTE más de $ 256,470

Easy Otie Whiz (fuera de Miss Poco Easy): NRHA LTE más de $ 233,610

Whizkey N Diamonds (fuera de Princess In Diamonds): NRHA LTE más de $ 216,335

Dun It For Whizkey (fuera de Dun It For Chex): NRHA LTE más de $ 214,803

Smoking Whiz (fuera de Glendas A Smokingun): NRHA LTE más de $ 208,838
