_______________________________________________________

Sultan b c 1816 (Selim - Bacchante, by Williamson's Ditto). Sire Line Selim. Family 8-b.

Bred by Mr Crockford, he was described as a splendid bay with a blaze and four white socks. He was said to be a long horse with a beautiful head, well sprung ribs and muscular quarters and his offspring were good doers. He was purchased at age seven by Brownlow Cecil (1795 - 1867), 2nd Marquis of Exeter, who later owned the remarkable Stockwell (ch c 1849 The Baron).

His turf career was admirable; he won fourteen races. Running for Mr Crockford he placed second in the Derby Stakes to the Duke of Portland's Tiresias (br c 1816). On his Derby form he was among the favorites for the St Leger Stakes, however, during a preparatory morning gallop he broke down and was out for the remainder of the year. He was said to prefer courses at Newmarket, over which he was unequalled despite carrying heavy weight.

He was a tremendous success in the Burleigh (or Burghley) stud, south of Stamford, Lincolnshire, and Champion Sire from 1832 to 1837. He sired five Two Thousand Guineas winners: Achmet (b c 1834), Augustus (ch c 1827), Glencoe* (ch c 1831), Ibrahim (br c 1832), and Bay Middleton (b c 1833) who won the Derby Stakes as well. He also sired Destiny (ch f 1833) who won the One Thousand Guineas, Green Mantle (b f 1826) who won the Oaks, and Galata (br f 1829) who won both the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks Stakes.

Bred by Willoughby Bertie (1740-1799), 4th Earl of Abingdon

A horse of great quality, power and endurance, many of his races were run over the Beacon Course, upwards of four miles. Not surprisingly he was considered the best horse of his time, winning twenty-eight races over the span of seven years, including the Jockey Club Purse three times, and the Craven Stakes. (Some sources say he ran more than forty times and won over thirty races). He was sold to Richard, 1st Earl Grosvenor, for 1500 guineas at five years of age, after his first race in 1778. He stood at Oxcroft Farm near Balsham, Cambridgeshire, for a fee of 20 guineas along with Justice (br c 1774 Herod). He was moved to Upper Hare Park near Newmarket in 1796. A great success in the stud, he sired 165 winners of £57,595 and 3 Cups. His best son was Waxy (ch c 1773) who ensured the continuance of the Eclipse sire line down to the present day. Sire Line Pot8os. Family 38.

He died at Upper Hare Park in November of 1800.

Friar's Balsam (1885–1899) was an English Thoroughbred racehorse. He was the outstanding British two-year-old of 1887, when he was unbeaten in seven races. He was a sick horse when a beaten favourite in the following year's 2000 Guineas, but returned in the autumn to beat Minting in the Champion Stakes. Friar's Balsam was retired to stud where he had some success as a sire of winners. He was trained at Kingsclere by John Porter for Lord Alington and Sir Frederick Johnstone.

Breeding

Friar's Balsam was a chestnut colt foaled in 1885. His conformation was not perfect, as he was described as being "very much over at the knee".[1] Friar's Balsam's sire was The Derby winner Hermit. His dam, Flower of Dorset, was sired by Breadalbane out of the Park Hill Stakes winner Imperatrice, the founder of Thoroughbred family 2-k.[2]

Racing career

1887: two-year-old season

Friar's Balsam began his racing career in the New Stakes at Ascot. In a field of seven that included Seabreeze and Ayrshire he won easily. After this race his owners Alington and Johnston refused an offer of £10,000 for him.[3] He followed the New Stakes up with a win in the Hurstborne Stakes at Stockbridge. His next start came in the July Stakes, where he beat Seabreeze by ¾ length.[4] His registered his fourth successive win in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, carrying a ten-pound weight penalty.[5] At the same meeting he also won the Molecombe Stakes in a walkover.[6] After a break won the Middle Park Plate beating a field that again included Seabreeze.[7] His seventh and final start of the season came in the Dewhurst Plate, where he won carrying a ten-pound penalty.[8]

1888: three-year-old season

Friar's Balsam had been the favourite for the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby throughout the winter and spring. A small field of six went to post for the 2000 Guineas. Ridden by Tom Cannon, Friar's Balsam was the 1/3 favourite, Ayrshire was at 100/12 and Orbit was 100/8. Friar's Balsam began near the rear, but he never came to the front and was in trouble a long way from the finish. He eventually finished fifth, with Ayshire winning easily by two lengths.[9] He had looked beaten only a quarter of a mile into the race and it was later found that an abscess in his mouth had burst in the opening stages.[10] He was then taken out of the Derby.

His first race back after the 2000 Guineas was the Lancashire Plate, where he finished unplaced and the race was won by Seabreeze.[11] He started the Champion Stakes at Newmarket in a field that included Minting. Minting started favourite the 60/100 favourite, with Friar's Balsam at 5/2. After the start he settled in third place of the six runners. In the closing stages Friar's Balsam and Minting drew rapidly clear of the others before they had even been asked for an effort. With Friar's Balsam in a slight lead Minting tried to close, but could not and Friar's Balsam beat him by half a length without being extended, the two being well clear of the rest.[12]

1889: four-year-old season

At the end of the 1888 season Friar's Balsam underwent an operation.[13] His only run as a four-year-old was in the Royal Stakes at Kempton Park, where he finished unplaced behind Ayrshire.[11][14]

Stud record

At stud Friar's Balsam sired Balsamo who won the valuable City and Suburban Handicap.[11] He also sired Mother Siegel who was the dam of 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby winner Minoru. Another of his daughters, Grand Marnier, was the grandam of the Derby winner Grand Parade.[1] Friar's Balsam's son Voter became a leading racehorse in North America, winning the Metropolitan Handicap. Voter in turn sired Ballot, who was rated the best older horse in America in 1908 and 1910.[15] Friar's Balsam died in 1899 at the age of fourteen.[1]

WHALEBONE ♘ 1807 ♞ ✺ © Bay ✺REINO UNIDO ✺ #Thoroughbred #PuraSangre ♂

Color: br

(GB)

Bred in Suffolk by Augustus Henry Fitzroy (1735-1811), 3rd Duke of Grafton, at Euston Hall, near Thetford, on the Suffolk/Norfolk border

Whalebone established the most enduring and influential sire line in the Stud Book, the best son of a series of best sons descending from Eclipse; there could hardly be a pedigree today that does not include his name through his own sons and extending through his tail-male descendants, such as Stockwell, Bonnie Scotland, Teddy and Swynford.

Bred in the purple, from the great female family of Julia (1756, Family 1), his grandam, Prunella (1788), was by one of the most important sires and racehorses of the day, Highflyer. She produced classic winners and dams of classic winners, and the respectable sire Waxy Pope, who was useful in Ireland. Her daughter, Whalebones dam, Penelope (1798, by Trumpator) was a top racehorse who beat both colts and fillies during her five years of racing. Retired to stud, she was an exemplary broodmare who produced, in addition to Whalebone, his brother Whisker a good racehorse, sire of two classic winners, and excellent broodmare sire, and Woful, sire of two classic winners. Her daughters, in their turn, also became outstanding broodmares, particularly Whalebones sister Web (1808), ancestress of Glencoe and Bay Middleton, among others, and Wire, who in Ireland, bred Verulam, a good runner and later sire of Wanderer, the 1855 Irish-bred Grand National winner. Wire established a tail-female line that included Uncas, a leading sire of steeplechasers in 1880s and Hilarity, who won over fences and was third dam of Ascot Gold Cup winner Santoi, a sire of good stayers and steeplechasers.

Whalebone was Champion Sire in 1826 and 1827. He is said to have broken a blood vessel after covering the mare Ogress and died the following day, February 6, 1831.

Pen茅lope

Pen茅lope

Ceroso

Pen茅lope muri贸 en 1824. [2]
