Andrea Busby’s Jets Top Gun has proven himself with multiple jockeys and at every level of barrel racing competition, and the gelding hit a career milestone at his second NFR appearance just as the curtain fell on the tenth round of competition.

“I’m starting to think he’s not even real anymore,” Busby said. “That horse is just incredible.”

Busby closed out her first National Finals rodeo breaking the NFR aggregate record inside the Thomas & Mack on 10 runs in 136.18 seconds, placing in nine out of 10 rounds, earning the $86,391 aggregate check and total earnings of $227,879.

Jets Top Gun was bred by and is owned by Busby Quarter Horses. His sire is the legendary Blazin Jetolena, the late stallion that represents the cornerstone of the Busby program. His dam, GL Famous First Lady is by Dash Ta Fame.

This week, Carlee Otero and the Blingolena won the Old Fort Days Rodeo, plus cashed in elsewhere to make a big jump up the WPRA barrel racing world standings to ring in June 2024.

As barrel racers across the country dodge flash flooding, tornadoes and a whole lot of mud, it’s a mixture of luck and preparation that are helping barrel racers like Otero capitalize as the full summer run looms.

“They let you enter rodeos all year long, so it’s okay to turn out when you need to,” Otero said. “You have to be smart about the ground and weather. You have to pay attention.”

June 2024 ProRodeo Barrel Racing Updates and Results

Closely following her own advice, Otero narrowly pulled the lever at the right time to kick off her profitable weekend.

“We actually made the decision to go to Mt. Pleasant at the very last minute,” Otero said. “We pulled into the rodeo when they were on the second event in the performance I was up in. But honestly, that ground has so much sand in it that it held great. It was the right choice.”

The choice paid off for Otero and “Sly,” a 2018 son of Blazin Jetolena out of Dash Of Bling by Dash Ta Fame. They won second, worth $1,934 in 15.12 seconds, bested only by Dona Kay Rule and High Valor.

Next, the duo headed to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they conquered the Old Fort Days Rodeo in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 16.60 seconds, worth $3,768 ahead of Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday.

“I’ve been wanting to win at that rodeo for a while,” Otero said of Fort Smith. “Last year, it was one of Sly’s first rodeos and we blew by the first barrel. This year, I’ve figured out that I need to come running earlier so that he can get his initial speed burst out, level out and pay attention. It really worked in that setup.”

The winning weekend will help Otero, who’s already earned $19,731.02 in 2024 within shooting distance of the top 15. After a handful of days at home, Carlee and her husband, tie-down roper Michael Otero, will head out with their younger children for the Canadian Calgary Qualifier, Reno Rodeo and more. While Michael will also compete in tie-down roping during and Carlee will fly to and from the trail to maintain her outside-the-arena career as a real estate agent—a profession she now shares with her eldest daughter—Carlee and the rest of the family have their sights set on a 2024 NFR qualification for her and 6-year-old Sly.

“My plan this year is to capitalize on every run and win where I show up,” Otero said. “I’m not taking any other horses out there with me this year at the start. It’s a mental thing for me. If I only take Sly, I never second-guess myself on who I’m running. It helps my confidence to focus on him.”

Veteran Cowgirl Overcoming Adversity Honoring Fiance Dominates in the Northwest
Grieving the sudden loss of her fiancé and pushing through the rodeo road challenges, this incredible cowgirl is striving to keep the dream of a 2024 NFR qualification alive.

By Sami Jo Buum | Sports Illustrated | Sep 3, 2024

Kassie Mowry sits pretty in the No.3 position in the 2024 World Standings with $151,282.84 won as of August 26. Mowry has accomplished winning over $150k in half the number of rodeos as the remaining top 15 contestants with only 24 rodeos on her count.

Aboard 6-year-old Force The Goodbye, Mowry has found herself grabbing large checks at the northwest rodeos. In two rodeos in Washington, Bremerton and Kennewick, the duo won $15,737 helping launch them even further up the standings. This gives Mowry and “Jarvis” nearly $38,000 won in a two-week span.

Jarvis crossed the million-dollar mark in lifetime earnings this summer.

There is no slowing down for Mowry, Jarvis, and “Goodbye Sophie” (Sophie), Jarvis’ paternal half-sister, as they make the final run for the 2024 WPRA standings. The group is headed to Puyallup, Wash. Sept. 5-8 for the Cinch Playoffs and both horses are qualified for The Breeders Challenge Finale in Fort Worth, Texas September 11-14.

Mowry, now home for a while, will be mounting out in Puyallup so her horses can save the miles and runs for the Breeders Challenge Finale.

Though right now it sounds like Mowry is living a fairytale, Mowry says, “The only thing that hasn’t been hard is running Jarvis.”

After losing her finance in a tragic accident this June, Mowry is experiencing struggles on the road as, “Being out there at the rodeos is too much idle time and isolation.”

Kassie explains she has never experienced as much pain as she is right now in grieving for Mike.

“I am just continuing to do the only thing I know to do and also what I know Mike would want me to do.

“Last year when we were leaving Las Vegas, Mike said to me, ‘You have to do whatever it takes to get Jarvis back here next year. He deserves to be here,” Kassie explained in an article by BarrelRacing.com.

Mowry is taking everything a day at a time. She has learned to “back off the pedal” if things are not feeling or going in the right direction for her. Jarvis has brought so much success and joy to Mowry and is truly a blessing as he helps her through her grieving process.

The strength Mowry has had this summer is staggering.

Though she is feeling some anxiety knowing Las Vegas will be difficult this year, having Jarvis back in the yellow arena will hopefully make it a little easier for her.

There is no doubt Mowry is considered one of barrel racings greatest of all time (GOAT’s) and through her darkest days she has continued to remain nearly unmatched with her horsemanship all the while handling life’s hardships with grace and class.

Always putting the horses first Mowry explained, “Everything I do is always with my horses’ best interest in mind. Doing what is best for them is what keeps them at the top of their game.”

Jarvis and Mowry will be a force to reckon with during the 10 grueling rounds in December at the Thomas and Mack Center.

She had an incredible fan base to begin with, but this year is different. Everyone will be cheering for Mowry and her incredible team of horses as they compete with more than just a win in mind.
